Research Methodology
Research Methodology
Zug Economy is committed to evidence-based analysis grounded in primary statistical sources, official government publications, and recognised international databases. This page describes the principal sources we use and the methodological choices we make in presenting economic and tax data about Canton Zug and Switzerland.
Primary Statistical Sources
Swiss Federal Statistical Office (FSO / BFS / UST) The FSO is the primary source for Swiss demographic, economic, and labour market statistics. We draw on FSO data for population figures, GDP estimates, employment statistics, company registration counts, and sector data. FSO data is typically published with a lag of six to eighteen months; we note publication dates when data currency is material.

Canton Zug Statistics Office (Statistik Zug) The cantonal statistics office publishes Zug-specific data including cantonal GDP, employment by sector, fiscal accounts, company counts, and demographic trends. Cantonal data frequently provides more granular detail on Zug than FSO national aggregates. We cross-reference both sources.
Website: https://www.zg.ch/statistik
Swiss Federal Tax Administration (FTA / ESTV / AFC) The FTA publishes official data on Swiss tax rates, tax revenues, and cantonal comparisons. The FTA’s annual publication on cantonal tax burdens (Steuerbelastung in der Schweiz) is the authoritative source for comparing effective tax rates across cantons and municipalities. We use this publication as the primary basis for tax rate comparisons.

Canton Zug Tax Administration (Steuerverwaltung Zug) For Zug-specific tax rates, cantonal ordinances, and published guidance on matters including cryptocurrency taxation and advance ruling procedures, we reference the Canton Zug Steuerverwaltung’s published materials directly.

International Sources
OECD Data and Publications The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development publishes comparative data on corporate taxation, individual income tax, and tax policy across member countries. We use OECD data for international comparisons of effective tax rates, statutory rates, and tax policy trends. The OECD’s documentation of Pillar Two (Global Anti-Base Erosion / GloBE) rules is the authoritative source for our coverage of the global minimum tax.

IMD World Competitiveness Ranking The IMD World Competitiveness Yearbook (published annually by IMD Business School, Lausanne) provides composite rankings of national and sub-national economic competitiveness across more than 60 indicators. Switzerland consistently places among the top five globally; we reference the IMD ranking and its sub-indicators when discussing Zug’s broader competitive position.

World Economic Forum Global Competitiveness Report Where relevant, we supplement IMD data with the WEF’s competitiveness framework, which covers institutional quality, infrastructure, macroeconomic stability, and innovation capacity.
World Bank Doing Business / Business Ready For comparisons of business registration, contract enforcement, and regulatory quality between Switzerland and peer jurisdictions.
Swiss National Bank Economic Reports
The Swiss National Bank (SNB) publishes quarterly economic bulletins, annual reports, and statistical releases covering Swiss GDP, monetary conditions, financial stability, and international investment positions. For macroeconomic context — exchange rate dynamics, interest rate environment, and the SNB’s assessment of Swiss economic conditions — we draw on SNB publications directly.
Website: https://www.snb.ch
The SNB’s banking statistics and balance of payments data are relevant to understanding Zug’s financial services sector and Switzerland’s position as an international financial centre.
SECO and Federal Council Sources
State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) SECO publishes Swiss labour market data, economic forecasts, and business cycle analyses. For employment statistics and Swiss economic outlook, SECO’s quarterly GDP estimates and labour market reports are primary sources.
Website: https://www.seco.admin.ch
Federal Council Decisions and Communiques For major policy decisions affecting the Swiss business environment — including the Federal Council’s decisions on OECD Pillar Two implementation, bilateral agreements with the EU, and corporate tax reform — we reference the Federal Council’s official communications and the relevant federal legislation.
CV VC Crypto Valley Report
The Crypto Valley VC (CV VC) publishes an annual report on the Swiss and Liechtenstein blockchain ecosystem, including data on company counts, employment, and capital raised within Crypto Valley. This is the primary source for our quantitative coverage of Zug’s blockchain sector.
Methodological Notes
Effective vs. Statutory Tax Rates A core methodological commitment of Zug Economy is to distinguish between statutory (headline) tax rates and effective tax rates. Swiss cantonal tax rates are expressed as multipliers of a base tax amount, and the combined federal/cantonal/communal effective rate depends on the specific municipality and legal entity type. We use the FTA’s published effective rate calculations as our primary reference for rate comparisons, supplemented by cantonal publications.
GDP and Per Capita Calculations Swiss cantonal GDP data is less granular and less frequently updated than national GDP data. Where cantonal GDP figures are estimates or interpolations, we note this clearly.
Company Count Data Swiss company registration data is maintained in the Zefix federal commercial register. The count of registered companies in Zug includes legal entities of all types including foundations, associations, and shell structures, not only operating businesses. We note this distinction when relevant to the analysis.
Currency All monetary figures are expressed in Swiss Francs (CHF) unless otherwise stated. Where international comparisons require EUR or USD, we use the conversion rate prevailing at the time of the relevant data point.
Data Lag Official statistical data is typically published with a lag. We note publication dates for key statistics. Where we are comparing data across sources with different reference periods, we flag this limitation.
Editorial Independence
Data selection and interpretation are made independently of any commercial consideration. Zug Economy does not accept payment for editorial content, and advertising relationships do not influence the selection or framing of statistical data. Where analysis involves judgement calls — such as characterising a jurisdiction’s regulatory environment or assessing the impact of a policy change — we present our reasoning transparently and identify the analysis as editorial judgement rather than established fact.
